International business meetings require a bit more consideration when planning. This is because many nationalities have different styles for conducting international meetings. Some nationalities believe that, the meeting serves as a venue to introduce them and to learn of viewpoints members share on issues in order to open up dialogues for discussion.
Some nationalities prefer a detailed agenda, outlining specific details; and action points that should be agreed upon within a given time.
Some expectations are that international meetings be conducted by strong leaders usually members of the organization in high positions. And that tight control over the individuals and activities is maintained.
A company that has subsidiaries in other countries may conduct meeting at home differently than the subsidiary in their native country. Most issues around conducting international meetings are the use of formal and informal language and body language.
Corporate culture in America can be quite different from corporate culture in France or England. Meeting attitudes will also vary from industry to industry technology companies might be comfortable with participants working on laptops while in the meeting, while others may feel uncomfortable with this activity.
Adding all these different components into the mix on top of holding the meeting in a language that international members are not the most comfortable with. Leads to international meetings having a high stress component and sometimes tend to be not as effective as individuals would like.
