Introduction
Most presentations these days are constructed and laid out using Microsoft Powerpoint or Keynote. For more impressive interactive presentations Flash can be used. But for the beginner I would suggest starting with Powerpoint. Microsoft has a trail version if you would like to experiment with the software at: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/default.aspx.
The software allows you to automate some of the basic design properties such as backgrounds and fonts. One thing you may want to watch out for is design overkill that is to say do not over design your presentation by using a lot of effects like 3D elements sounds, slide fading etc... When you over design your presentation you diminish the content of what it is you are trying to communicate. It is always better to under design than to do too much, if you have never designed a presentation before I would suggest you speak with someone who has or speak with a design professional.
